Transform Your Space with DIY Essential Oil Room Sprays
Room sprays offer a convenient and affordable way to enjoy the benefits of aromatherapy throughout your home. Whether used to freshen linens, enhance the ambiance of a bathroom, refresh upholstery, or simply bring a burst of nature-inspired fragrance to any room, room sprays can uplift and comfort. When creating your own, opt for natural essential oils instead of synthetic fragrance oils, which can lead to headaches and respiratory irritation.
Basic Room Spray Recipe:
25% ethanol (150 proof alcohol or higher)
73% distilled water
2% essential oil
For a 2 oz spray bottle, this translates to:
15ml ethanol
43ml distilled water
24 drops of essential oil(s)
When working with water-based recipes such as room sprays, creams, or lotions, microbial growth can become a concern, so incorporating a preservative is essential. High-proof alcohol (like ethanol) serves this purpose well in the provided recipe. For a simpler approach, fill about a third of the bottle with alcohol, add distilled water up to the shoulder, and finish with the essential oils. Shake well before each use to ensure the essential oils disperse evenly.
Room Sprays for Emotional Support and Wellbeing
I love using room sprays not only for their delightful aroma but also for the emotional benefits of aromatherapy. Certain essential oils can help with focus, creativity, or relaxation, depending on the blend. For example, during the winter months, when I often feel less motivated, I use a room spray formulated to support creativity and energy. If you, too, need an emotional boost, I’d be happy to guide you in selecting scents that meet your specific needs.

Essential Oils for Mental Strength and Motivation
Conifers
Rich in monoterpenes, conifer oils purify the air and help clear the mind, especially in stressful moments. Their grounding, calming qualities are particularly helpful for mental clarity and creativity. Cedarwood, sourced from wood rather than leaves or needles, is grounding and strengthens resilience during challenging times.
Black Spruce (Picea mariana)
Siberian Fir (Abies sibirica)
Cypress (Cupressus sempervirens)
Cedarwood (Cedrus atlantica or Juniperus virginia)
Citrus Oils
Uplifting and balancing, citrus oils are perfect for countering stress and fostering a positive mindset. Their energizing aroma helps reduce perfectionism and encourages a cheerful outlook. Note: avoid topical use of cold-pressed citrus oils like bergamot, grapefruit, and lime, as they can be phototoxic.
Lime (Citrus latifolia)
Bergamot (Citrus bergamia)
Grapefruit (Citrus paradisi)
Herbal Oils
Herbal essential oils bring energy, clarity, and motivation, making them ideal for busy days. Many of these oils reduce fear and help us remain present, focused, and resilient against mental fatigue.
Peppermint (Mentha piperita)
Rosemary (Salvia rosmarinus / Rosmariuns officinalis)
Sweet Marjoram (Origanum majorana)
Juniper Berry (Juniperus communis)
My Go-To Blend: "Brain Blend"
One of my current favorites is a simple yet effective blend that supports mental clarity and motivation, which I call my "Brain Blend."
Brain Blend Recipe:
3 parts Cedarwood (Juniperus virginiana)
3 parts Sweet Orange (Citrus sinesis)
2 parts Black Pepper (Piper nigrum)
This blend works beautifully in a room spray, diffuser, or mixed with a carrier oil for a roll-on application. It has been invaluable in helping me overcome the winter slump and restoring motivation. I encourage you to experiment with your own blends—creating a recipe that speaks to your unique needs can be a rewarding, uplifting experience.
