My dad has always had an affinity for junipers. He would plant them anywhere and everywhere...he still does. Growing up, I was surrounded by junipers, and let me tell you, I did not appreciate them as he did. It is like he went out of his way to pick the prickliest varieties just to poke me. I can't even count the number of times I ended up in a battle with a juniper bush, and guess who always ended up with scratches? Yep, me. But as much as I did not like them, I loved their fragrance.

When I moved away, silly me, I was excited to be moving away from the junipers. I originally moved to the Redwoods, so I did not miss the junipers right away. But when I moved again, I found myself longing for the junipers, and the Redwoods too, but who doesn't long for the Redwoods? I have come to admit that I too have a strange affinity for junipers. When I make the long trek down to see my parents, I am sure to pause a little extra new the junipers as I walk their property. These special prickle bushes have so much more to offer than just scratches. Their berries alone are food, medicine, and an aromatic delight.


Culinary Uses

These bluish-purple berries of Juniperus communis, which are more of a pine cone than a berry, add a distinctive flavor to a variety of culinary creations. Did you know that juniper berries can take several years to ripen? Unripe berries are used for making gin, while ripe berries, both fresh and dried, are prized for their culinary and medicinal uses.

The fresh ripe berries boast an intense, complex salty flavor, while the dried (cured) berries are shelf-stable for at least a year, allowing for prolonged culinary experimentation. They pair exceptionally well with strong-flavored red meats and fish dishes. However, be cautious not to crunch down on these dried berries, as your teeth might not appreciate it! Alternatively, you can use a mortar and pestle to grind the berries, creating a flavorful dry rub that is delightful on poultry and wild game.


Here are some creative ways to incorporate juniper berries into your cooking:

  • Crockpot Magic: Try tossing some dried juniper berries into the crockpot when cooking a roast. Their aromatic flavor will infuse into the meat, adding depth and complexity to your dish.

  • Pickling Power: Blend juniper berries with mustard seeds in a pickling brine for a unique twist on pickled vegetables. Asparagus, onions, and cucumbers all benefit from the addition of juniper's earthy notes.

  • In Sauerkraut: Juniper berries are a classic ingredient to add depth of flavor to homemade sauerkraut. Simply add 5 to 10 crushed juniper berries to your sauerkraut mixture before fermentation. The berries' earthy and slightly citrusy notes complement the tangy flavor of sauerkraut, resulting in a uniquely delicious fermented dish.

  • Drinks: Prepare a unique syrup by simmering sugar and juniper berries together. Add this flavorful syrup to fizzy cocktails or mocktails for a refreshing twist.

  • Herbal Blend: Get creative with a homemade herbal blend featuring juniper berries. Use a large peppermill to combine juniper berries with peppercorns, sea salt, and your favorite herbs. This versatile blend can be used as a seasoning for meats, and vegetables, or even sprinkled over a salad for a gourmet twist.


Juniper Peppermill Blend

  • 6 parts peppercorns

  • 4 parts whole coriander

  • 2 parts rosemary

  • 1-3 parts sea salt

  • 1 part orange peel

  • 1 part juniper berries

Experiment with the ratios to customize the blend to your taste preferences. Enjoy the aromatic flavors of this juniper-infused seasoning on a variety of dishes!


Medicinal Uses

Juniper berries have been valued for their medicinal properties for centuries and across a variety of cultures. Traditionally, both the leaves and the berries have been used as an aromatic medicine. The berries were often chewed raw or brewed into a potent tea to address various health concerns, including gastrointestinal discomfort, rheumatic pain, and back and chest ailments. With their natural anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties, juniper berries provide relief from aches and pains while promoting overall well-being.

The leaves (needles) of the juniper plant have been utilized for their aromatic and therapeutic properties. Burned as incense, juniper needles offer respiratory support, clearing nasal passages and easing congestion to facilitate easier breathing. Additionally, the leaves have been combined with the berries in teas to support the kidneys; used for their diuretic properties to promote detoxification and urinary tract function.


Here are some of the key health benefits associated with both teas and tinctures made with these versatile berries. There is a variety of research being conducted on the potential health benefits of juniper berries and their essential oil, including antidiabetic and heart health potential. Bear in mind that these berries are rather drying, so it is best not to use them daily for an extended time:

  • Urinary Tract Health: Juniper berries are known for their diuretic properties, allowing them to be beneficial for supporting the urinary tract. They can help promote the elimination of toxins and excess fluids from the body, potentially reducing the risk of urinary tract infections (UTIs) and kidney stones.

  • Digestive Support: Juniper berries have been traditionally used to aid digestion and relieve gastrointestinal discomfort. They possess carminative properties, which means they help alleviate gas, bloating, and indigestion.

  • Respiratory Health: The volatile oils found in juniper berries, including camphor, have expectorant and decongestant properties, making them useful for clearing respiratory congestion and soothing coughs. Juniper tea or steam inhalation can help relieve symptoms of respiratory conditions such as bronchitis and asthma.

  • Anti-inflammatory Effects: Juniper berries contain compounds with anti-inflammatory properties, which may help reduce inflammation in the body. This can be beneficial for conditions such as arthritis, rheumatism, and general muscle pain.

  • Antioxidant Protection: Juniper berries are rich in antioxidants, including flavonoids and polyphenols, which help protect the body against oxidative stress and damage caused by free radicals. Research is in the early stages, but it appears that the antioxidant properties of juniper berries have neuroprotective benefits that may be useful in the treatment of Alzheimer's, and similar neurodegenerative diseases.

With potent anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antiseptic properties, juniper berry used topically reduces inflammation and pain associated with conditions like psoriasis, acne, and rosacea.

Juniper Berry Healing Salve

  • Jojoba oil or your favorite carrier oil

  • 1 part juniper berries, crushed

  • 1 part rosemary

  • 1 part calendula

  • beeswax (1-2 oz of beeswax per cup of infused oil)

  • optional essential oil(s) of juniper berry and/or black pepper

Make an infused oil with the listed herbs, adjust the recipe as needed. Per cup of infused oil, use 1-2 ounces of beeswax (the more beeswax you use, the thicker your salve will be). Melt the beeswax in a double boiler and add the infused oil. Remove from heat, allow to cool slightly, then add the essential oil if using. For a 1% dilution, use 40 drops of essential oil per cup of oil. Be sure to blend the essential oil into the oil and beeswax well so that it is well dispersed. Pour into tins or small jars. Label the final product.

This salve can be used for achy muscles as well as to bring relief areas of eczema and psoriasis.

  • Essential Oil: Juniper berry essential oil is generally non-toxic and non-hazardous but may cause skin irritation or sensitization if oxidized. When applying to the skin, it's advisable to use in low dilution to minimize the risk. It's recommended to perform a patch test before using juniper berry essential oil, or any new essential oil.


As with any herbal remedy, it's advisable to consult with a qualified healthcare practitioner before incorporating juniper berries into your wellness routine, especially if you have underlying health conditions or are taking medications.
