Holiday Season Potpourri

Festive DIY Potpourri for a Cozy, Aromatic Home

As the leaves change and the air turns crisp, it’s time to get excited about the delightful warmth of the fall and winter seasons.  One of my favorite ways to welcome this time of year is by making potpourri—a simple yet creative way to fill your home with the scents of the holidays. Crafting your own potpourri allows you to personalize the aromas that surround you, reflecting the festive spirit and beauty of the season.

Why Make Your Own Potpourri?

Unlike store-bought versions laden with artificial fragrances, homemade potpourri uses all-natural ingredients and essential oils, offering a healthier, customizable way to create a warm and inviting atmosphere in your home. The joy of potpourri lies in its versatility; you are free to mix and match ingredients to create a combination that reflects your personal style and preferences. Whether you are aiming for cozy, spicy scents to welcome autumn or a fresh, evergreen fragrance for winter, the possibilities are endless.

Ingredient Options for Seasonal Potpourri

To create a potpourri that truly captures the essence of fall and winter, focus on aromatic and visually appealing ingredients. Some of my favorite additions include:

  • Pinecones, Acorns, or Nutshells: These classic additions bring rustic textural charm and serve as natural fixatives for the essential oils, helping to release their fragrances over time

  • Dried Botanical Material: Rose petals, calendula, moss, and bay leaves add texture, visual interest, and gentle aromas

  • Spices: Whole cinnamon sticks, cloves, nutmeg, allspice, star anise, and cardamom pods add warmth and seasonal charm

  • Powdered Spices: Enhance the fragrance with ground cinnamon, ginger, and clove for an extra aromatic kick

  • Resins: Resins like pine, frankincense, and myrrh not only add a rich, earthy aroma but also act as a fixative, helping to lock in scents for longer-lasting fragrance

  • Pine Needles or Rosemary Sprigs: Dried pine needles and rosemary sprigs impart a refreshing scent that can help cleanse the air and evoke memories of cozy winter walks

  • Essential Oils: Seasonal favorites like cinnamon, clove, sweet orange, juniper berry, cedarwood, and fir provide a fragrant boost. These oils not only freshen the air but also offer immune and respiratory support, making your home a happier, healthier environment

Creative Container Ideas

For displaying your potpourri, consider using vintage mason jars, festive bowls, or decorative trays. A jar with a lid is perfect for preserving scents when not in use. You can also decorate your containers with ribbons, burlap, or seasonal elements for a personal touch.

How to Make Your Potpourri

Creating aromatic potpourri is fun and easy! Here’s a simple recipe to inspire your creativity:

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup acorns or walnut shells

  • 1/2 cup dried orange slices

  • 1/2 cup dried spruce tips or pine needles

  • 1 Tbsp dried juniper berries

  • 3-4 whole cinnamon sticks

  • 1 Tbsp whole cloves

  • 1 tsp frankincense resin (tears)

  • Essential oils: 4-6 drops of your choice (juniper berry, clove, cedarwood, Siberian fir)

Instructions

Combine Ingredients: In a large bowl, mix the acorns, orange slices, conifer needles, juniper berries, spices, and resin

Add Essential Oils: Drop the essential oils over the mixture and stir gently to ensure even distribution, be sure to wear gloves to avoid skin irritation from the undiluted essential oils

Store or Display: Transfer the mixture into your chosen container. Display it in a decorative bowl for an instant holiday centerpiece, but avoid direct sunlight to prevent fading.

If you're giving it as a gift, personalize the container with labels and festive decorations for an extra special touch!
