Are you looking for a quick and easy last-minute DIY Christmas gift idea? How about treating your loved ones (or yourself!) to a luxurious foot scrub? Indulge in a pampering session with this simple recipe that takes just minutes to whip up.
Exfoliating your feet regularly comes with a host of skincare benefits. It helps prevent dry, cracked skin by eliminating the barrier created by dead skin cells, ensuring better absorption of moisturizing creams. This process enhances the overall appearance and feel of your feet, softening rough patches caused by calluses or corns and reducing the visibility of scars and blemishes. The bonus? Improved circulation, leaving your feet revitalized and refreshed.
The skin benefits of salt scrubs:
Exfoliation: Salt scrubs effectively remove dead skin cells leaving feet softer and smoother
Circulation Boost: Salt scrubs enhance circulation
Muscle Relief: When applied to tired feet, salt scrubs may alleviate muscle aches
Detox: The salt can help to remove dirt, bacteria, and toxins, providing a deep cleansing
Relaxation: As you scrub your feet, your feet get a little massage, which helps you feel more relaxed
As always, this recipe is not set in stone, feel free to customize it with different types or amounts of oils, and salts, or substitute the salt with sugar if you have sensitive skin.
Base Recipe (updated):
5 Tbsp Dead Sea salt
4 Tbsp Epsom salt
2 Tbsp jojoba oil
1 Tbsp olive oil (or other carrier oil)
7 drops patchouli (Pogostemon cablin) essential oil
6 drops frankincense (Boswellia serrata) essential oil
4 drops grapefruit (Citrus paradise) essential oil
This makes about a 2% dilution with the essential oils. Feel free to reduce or omit the essential oils if you prefer. Store the scrub in a glass container, or a PET plastic container. The salt can work as a preservative, but be sure to avoid getting water into the scrub container to avoid bacterial growth.
This recipe has been updated. It previously included 1 Tbsp of Castile soap, but since publishing, I have learned an important lesson: true soaps, such as Castile soap should not be mixed with mineral salts such as Epsom salts as they create soap scum made of insoluble magnesium salt. Good to know, as I do hate cleaning soap scum. Simple fix, I just switched from 1 Tbsp Castile soap to an additional Tbsp of a carrier oil, such as olive oil, or any oil you prefer.
Use caution when using oil-based products in the shower as it can leave your feet a bit slick
For best results, soak your feet first to soften the skin. Use the salt scrub to exfoliate the feet, rinse off, dry, and put on cozy-comfy socks. Use one to three times per week. Substitute with sugar for use on other areas of the body.
Benefits of Dead Sea salt: Dead Sea salt is a rich source of essential minerals like magnesium, sodium, potassium, and calcium, offering a myriad of benefits for both skin and overall health. This unique salt is hydrating and exfoliating and possesses pain-relieving, anti-inflammatory, and detoxifying properties. Additionally, it can potentially reduce stress, making it a versatile and holistic choice for skincare and well-being.
Benefits of Epsom's salt: Epsom salt, also known as bath salts, originates from Epsom, England. Abundant in magnesium, a mineral many people lack, it is renowned for addressing various ailments and skin conditions. Epsom salt is praised for its stress-relieving properties, capacity to reduce inflammation, and effectiveness in exfoliating and softening the skin. Additionally, it proves beneficial for hydrating dry skin and alleviating itchiness and scaliness.
Benefits of jojoba oil: Derived from the Chinensis plant, jojoba oil is a liquid wax rich in vitamin E and B vitamins. This versatile wax moisturizes the skin, regulates natural oil production, offers antioxidant protection, displays anti-inflammatory effects, may have some antibacterial properties, and provides soothing relief for sensitive skin.
Benefits of Castile soap: Although I have updated the recipe to not include Castile soap, I still want to mention it as it is still a wonderful product. Castile soap is still a good option in your recipe if you are making a salt scrub that does not contain Epsom salt or magnesium flakes. Castile soap is a natural soap devoid of synthetic detergents or foaming agents, suitable for all skin types. Recognized for its mild yet effective properties, it gently cleanses, nourishes, and moisturizes the skin. Ideal for sensitive skin, this soap can also be used for cleansing wounds and serves as a natural deodorant. Dr. Bronner's is my favorite brand of Castile soap as it is easy to find, and it comes in unscented and scented options.
To really kick things up a notch, consider using an herbally infused oil, such as infusing jojoba with:
Vanilla - divine oil for the winter months to uplift the spirits
Lavender - pure relaxation
Chamomile - calming and hydrating, perfect to detangle winter stress
Hops - soothing, calming, and nourishing, perfect to use before bedtime
Calendula - great choice for neglected feet that need rejuvenating
Enjoy the joy of giving the gift of self-care this holiday season!
